Growing up in the suburbs, my first love for cats started unexpectedly. Two houses down lived the meanest old lady you could imagine. She was so mean that even riding your bike on her sidewalk would send her storming out in a fit of rage. But this same woman took in all the neighborhood strays. She'd put out bowls of food around her house and at all times of the day there'd be at least five cats lined up on the side of her house, feasting like royalty on their second breakfast.

Most neighbors hated it because her cat buffet sometimes attracted the occasional raccoon or a family of possums. But as a kid, she was practically the Snow White of the neighborhood—if Snow White was really scary and also yelled at children. Her house was my first introduction to the charm of cats and all their cuteness. Seeing them loafed up with no care in the world that the rest of the neighborhood couldn't stand their presence turned into a full-blown love for cats.
